Early 20th Century Antique Caucasian Kuba Soumak Rug • Luxury Handmade Wool Carpet • 10x10 Square Tribal Area Rug for Living Room, Bedroom, Dining & Office

This antique Caucasian Soumak rug is a symphony of geometry and folklore, with a chain of octagonal medallions dancing across a sea of deep indigo and madder red. Nestled discreetly in the upper field is the hand-woven date "1344" in Arabic numerals—marking its birth in the year 1925–26, and giving it the quiet gravitas of a century-old heirloom. A mix of jewel-toned blues, golds, and soft greens pop from the madder red ground, giving the entire piece a lively, almost musical rhythm. It’s sophisticated, yes—but it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s what makes it sing.

Woven in the highland Shirvan or Kuba regions of the South Caucasus—modern-day Azerbaijan—this Soumak is a rare testament to early 20th-century artisanry. Its sturdy flatweave is tougher than a kilim, and its richly dyed palette speaks to a mastery of form and meaning, likely made for a discerning local patron.
