✔ This vintage rug from Kars, Eastern Turkey, has a striking geometric composition softened by decades of natural wear. Three octagonal medallions run through the center, connected by bold stepped outlines and surrounded by layers of finely patterned tribal borders. The design feels structured and architectural, while the gentle variations in the weaving give it an unmistakably handmade character.
The palette is warm, earthy, and beautifully understated — soft brown and muted caramel tones create a grounded foundation, while sandy beige, taupe, and ivory details bring lightness and definition to the geometric pattern.
Hand-knotted in Kars during the 1960s from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation, this rug reflects the distinctive character of Kurdish weaving from Eastern Anatolia. Its angular medallions, small symbolic motifs, and repeating borders have a strong folkloric presence, balanced by an unusually restrained color palette.
The rug has naturally mellowed with age, developing a low, even pile and areas of gentle fading that soften the original design. Subtle abrash adds movement to the brown field, while the worn surface gives it a relaxed, authentic vintage feel. Unlike a newly distressed rug, this character has developed through actual use over time.
